What to Consider Before You Start a Candle Business Candles are a "hot" item right now and direct selling companies are taking note of this. Many new direct selling candle companies are starting up and offering enticing incentives to join. In 2007 several such companies began business, recruited direct sales people with the offer of a "free" sign up, took orders and then disappeared leaving many distributors and customers high and dry. Having been in the direct sales business for almost three years, I can offer a list of some important criteria to look for when choosing a direct sales candle business.
Has the company reached a "4-5 year benchmark"? Most businesses, a whopping 95%, fail within their first five years. Obviously a track record is a good indicator of future growth. Has company information been disclosed? Or do you see smoke and mirrors? Can you visit their headquaters or speak personally to the owners? Are auto-ship, website, and marketing costs discussed up front? Make sure they are. If the company/potential sponsor is reluctant to discuss these questions freely, run, Forrest, run! Are you encouraged to ask questions and think about it? Or are you pressured with someone trying to 'close' you on the first or second call? Avoid the high pressure pitch. Ideally, you'd like to be working with people who respect you as a person and not with people who see dollar signs next to your name. Can you market freely? Many direct sales candles companies have restrictions on online marketing. If selling online via ebay or etsy, or your own personal website is something you want do do, you'll need to ask right up front. Also ask if you can use the company name on your websites, etc. There are many different ways to make money with a candle business- expos, retail, home parties, fundraising, corporate gifts, team building, online, offline, etc. Some companies are party plan oriented and require you to hold a certain amount of candle parties each month or quarter. Make sure the way you'd like to market is available to you as a distributor and that training in that venue is provided. Does the company offer a line of natural wax candles?The biggest trend is the natural wax candle, including soy. Having a "natural" line is crucial to the growth of a candle business. A candle business can be fun and profitable. You need to do your homework and check things out before jumping in. It's a good idea to have what you are looking for in mind before you go shopping for that candle business.
